I have been researching new colorants for a while now. Though these are liquid , and I have previously used combinations of paints, concrete sealants and raw pigment ; have decided to give these a try. One thing that is a big seller factor for me is it is a sampler set, The colors are blend -able and I will be adding them into some of my other mixes and testing results. No I do not make a commission , Just free info if you are reading this blog.
Work on Delphine the seahorse continues ..... I think she is the longest running piece in progress ever - so many starts and stops due to other obligations. Finally I am to the coloring point and all her details are coming together. A little extra motivation came into play with a lovely invitation from Tallahassee to show so I am pushing to meet that deadline and finish the color and sealant .
Classes are in full swing and I was very happy to see I have officially increased enrollment in clay significantly in the time I have been teaching. My wheel class filled in two days last term , I added an extra hand building and it filled within a week !
So I will have an additional class for spring, I:m very happy about this as this means all the students who were my first group at this teaching position get to have one more advanced class for next term. Thirty or so new students are starting with me now and most of them have been wonderful . Two groups of hand building and so my fish group and my bird group. There first projects from building together on day one.
They are now working on "Heritage Lanterns " Because it's important to note
Ceramics courses have never been only about mugs, plates and vases . Students whether in a community college, liberal arts setting , AA or BFA program learn critical skills in the making process in both the three dimensional construction of work and the surface . Surface design includes elements and principles of two dimensional design language , skills and techniques to create a finished object.
How does that influence students in other courses , other careers, negotiating challenges in daily life and in the workforce ? My classes are currently making "Heritage Lanterns " exploring their family origins, and learning measurement, the coil building method and how to make elements fit together to create a whole with pre determined size parameters.
O in closing , I'm busy which makes me happy, producing my own work - which makes me happy -other people are excited about making with clay and concrete . You guessed it makes me happy ........
One more wish for happiness ? Show me what you are making !
